In modern industrial applications, handling media at extreme temperatures presents complex engineering challenges. Cryogenic ball valves are highly specialized flow control devices designed to operate reliably at temperatures below -150°C (-238°F), down to -196°C (-320°F) for liquid nitrogen and even -253°C for liquid hydrogen. At these severe temperatures, standard structural metals turn brittle, traditional soft elastomers lose their elasticity entirely, and thermal contraction can cause moving valve components to seize, leading to catastrophic leaks or operational failure.
As energy markets transition towards cleaner-burning natural gas (LNG), liquefied hydrogen, and high-purity industrial gases, the demand for robust cryogenic ball valves has intensified. These valves serve as crucial safety and containment points in storage tanks, gasification plants, sea-bound transport vessels, and aerospace launchpads. Safe and reliable cryogenic fluid handling requires valves to feature extended bonnets, cavity pressure relief mechanisms, and advanced low-emission packing, ensuring that operations remain productive, environmentally compliant, and safe for personnel.
Specially engineered extended bonnets position stem seals away from cold media, utilizing the gas column to maintain seal temperature above freezing point.
When cryogenic liquid is trapped in the ball cavity, ambient heat causes vaporization and rapid pressure spikes. Internal relief channels vent this pressure safely upstream.
Utilizing PCTFE, reinforced PTFE, or metal-to-metal seating technology to achieve zero-leakage performance under extreme thermal contraction pressures.
Founded in 1996, Yuhuan Yongda Fluid Control Co., Ltd. (formerly Yuhuan Yongda Plumbing Co., Ltd.) is strategically located in Yuhuan, Zhejiang—widely recognized as the "China Valve Capital." Over more than two decades, we have scaled our production facilities to cover a massive factory area of more than 45,000 square meters, with a total actual usable area reaching 80,000 square meters.
Our commitment to technical precision and operational reliability has enabled us to supply high-grade fluid control systems to clients in more than 20 countries. Under our premium brand, Cokaren, we pursue the brand promise of "keep flowing, keep warming", producing heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and specialized industrial valves that offer refined appearance, unmatched efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
Understanding the engineering criteria, material selections, and dynamic parameters that define robust low-temperature performance.
Engineering cryogenic valves requires compliance with key global industry standards. Standard ball valves cannot be adapted for cryogenic use through simple seal swaps; they must be engineered from the ground up to comply with regulatory standards like BS 6364, API 6D, API 607 (fire safety), and ISO 15848-1 (fugitive emissions). Under cryogenic conditions, materials like 316 stainless steel, CF8M, and nickel alloys are preferred due to their high Charpy V-notch impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures.
| Feature Parameter | Standard Ball Valve | Cryogenic Ball Valve (LNG/LH2) | Engineering Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating Temp | -29°C to 120°C | -196°C to -254°C | Maintains ductibility under deep cryo environments. |
| Bonnet Design | Standard short neck | Extended Bonnet (BS 6364 compliant) | Protects packing from ice build-up and cold embrittlement. |
| Cavity Pressure | Symmetric fluid trap | Automatic Upstream Pressure Relief | Prevents explosive rupture from gas expansion in the cavity. |
| Seat Materials | Standard PTFE / Nylon | PCTFE / Reinforced Teflon / Metal-to-Metal | Guarantees bubble-tight shut-off without cold flow distortion. |
| Emissions Standard | Standard industrial packings | ISO 15848-1 / API 622 certified low leakage | Minimizes fugitive loss of critical gases (e.g., Helium, Hydrogen). |
*Technical Note: Extended bonnets must be installed vertically or within 45 degrees of vertical to ensure the gas columns remain stable, preventing liquid from rising up and freezing the stem seals.
How our custom engineering solves flow security issues across critical global industries.
With global maritime rules limiting sulfur emissions, ports in Europe and North America have deployed LNG bunkering stations. Our specialized cryogenic-grade ball valves ensure secure shutoffs, preventing hazardous liquid releases during bunkering operations.
Propulsion engines require reliable flow of liquid oxygen (LOX) and liquid hydrogen (LH2). The high mechanical strength of our cryogenic ball valves offers high pressure cycling resistance and bubble-tight sealing on aerospace launchpads.
Industrial production of liquid oxygen, nitrogen, and argon requires cryogenic distillation. The valves operating inside ASUs must remain clean from oil, grease, and hydrocarbons to prevent explosive reactions with pure oxygen gas.
We deploy over 600 sets of advanced production and testing equipment, including more than 80 specialized, high-precision machining tools. This manufacturing capability enables us to serve demanding industrial fluid markets with precision. Our quality management system has successfully passed certifications for ISO9001-2015 (Quality Management), ISO14001-2015 (Environmental Management), and ISO45001-2018 (Occupational Health & Safety Management).
Our Manufacturing Tenet:
"Customer first, Quality based. Fine work, no leakage." Under these operating guidelines, every valve undergoes hydro-pressure testing, gas-tight leakage checks, and cryogenic test protocols before leaving the plant.
Furthermore, Yuhuan's local valve ecosystem provides efficient sourcing of raw copper, steel alloys, and precision components. By consolidating forging, hot pressing, precision machining, surface treatment, and cryo-testing in one geographic hub, we offer cost-effective, dependable manufacturing solutions for global projects.
